The Emergency Planner

What should I prepare for my pets if we need to leave?

By the team behind The Emergency Planner, designed in Austin, Texas. Updated October 2026.

Keep one card per pet with the details a helper would need. Microchip number and registry, vet, medicines and doses, food and where it is kept, and where the leash or carrier is.

Name who cares for them if you cannot, and look up a pet-friendly place to stay ahead of time, since many shelters cannot take pets.

For each pet

  • A recent photo.
  • Kind and breed, microchip number and its registry.
  • Vet name and phone.
  • Medicines and doses, and food.
  • Where the leash or carrier is kept.
  • Who cares for them if you cannot, with a backup.

In the go bag

  • Food and water for a few days.
  • Leash or carrier, and waste bags.
  • Vaccination records and medicines.
